What is it?
PORCUPINE
How big is it?
20 inches long, 10 - 28 pounds
What does it eat (forage)?
Plants and bark from trees
Where does it live (habitat)?
In the forest, spends most of its time up in trees.
What does it do (behavior)?
Moves around very sloooowwwwly, doesn1t have to run because it has sharp quills all over its body except for the stomach.
When threatened, porcupines will turn their backs towards the other animal, lifi its quills and thrash its tail back and forth. They do NOT throw quills.
If an animal (like a dog, for instance) gets quills in its nose, they work inwards at a rate of up to one inch a day, and may even be fatal if they puncture an important organ.
The porcupine is considered a real delicacy by the Cree, who burn the quills off to get the meat.
Scat:
Porcupines make 75-200 scats a day, look for scat that looks like elbow macaroni at the base of trees.
